Odysseus goes to visit his loyal swineherd, Eumaeus. Odysseus finds Eumaeus outside his hut, shaping a pair of sandals to his feet. Eumaeus invites Odysseus in and he talks about how much he misses his kind master, Odysseus. Eumaeus tells Odysseus all about the suitors and how kind of a master Odysseus was. Odysseus plays dumb and pretends that he has no idea who his master is. Eumaeus is almost certain that Odysseus is dead. Odysseus swears that Odysseus is still alive. He predicts that Odysseus will come home and punish all who dishonor his wife and son. Odysseus says that he is from Crete and that he fought in the Trojan war for nine years. Once he was finally home, the gods sent him to Egypt with a couple ships and companions. He lived in Egypt for a couple years and when he got to Thesprotia, he heard of Odysseus. The crew made a wicked plot to put him deeper into his misery. They replaced his cloak with rags and made him a slave. Odysseus bets Eumaeus that Odysseus will return and when he does, Eumaeus will give him a tunic and send him to Dulichium. If Odysseus does not return, Eumaeus has permission to throw him over a large precipice. Odysseus tells him a story form the Trojan war. Eumaeus gives Odysseus some clothing and lets him sleep there while Eumaeus sleeps outside to guard the property.
